Elaine Hicks freediving beside a dive line in deep blue water

THERAPY · FREEDIVING · NERVOUS SYSTEM EDUCATION

Your body is already communicating.
I help you understand what it is saying.

When state changes, access changes. I translate the patterns held in breath, tension, movement, attention, and behavior—helping you reconnect with your body and create the conditions where choice, capacity, and skill can emerge.

DESCEND TO UNDERSTAND

01 / RECOGNITION

Maybe the problem
isn’t what you think it is.

You may know the coping skill, the equalization technique, the reason you need rest, or the choice you want to make. Knowing is not always the same as having access. Your body is not refusing to cooperate—it is communicating that something in the conditions has changed.

OVERWHELM

You lose access to every coping skill the moment you need one.

Not a failure of insight—a nervous system under enough pressure to change what is available.

Create access now →
DEPTH

The skill worked at 10 meters. At 20, it vanished.

Before calling it a mental block, ask what changed in the diver’s physiological state.

Teach beyond technique →
INSTRUCTION

“Just relax” is not a strategy.

When technique is intact but access is gone, the instructor needs a different map.

Coach the state →
REST

You are exhausted—but slowing down feels worse.

A body organized around vigilance may experience rest as exposure, not relief.

Understand why →
BEYOND THE DIVE

Freediving changes something in you that extends beyond the water.

Depth can reveal the distance between knowing, feeling, and having access to choice.

02 / THE PREMISE

When state changes,
access changes.

Before I ask what went wrong, I want to know what changed. Patterns in breath, tension, movement, attention, and behavior can reveal a state change before a person has language for it. We make those signals legible, reconnect sensation with meaning, and change the internal or external conditions that allow capacity to become available again.

“Coach the state,
not just the skill.”

03 / START WHERE YOU ARE

Different pressure.
One underlying question.

Back to Choice

A guided, immediate reset for the moment when anxiety, panic, anger, or fear makes every tool feel unreachable. The goal is not to solve the whole problem—it is to restore enough capacity to choose what happens next.

WHEN THE WATER REVEALS THE PATTERN

Behind the Mask

The first book connecting freediving, nervous system regulation, recovery, and resilience. A field guide for understanding what the body communicates underwater—and what those signals can teach us on land.

WHEN TECHNIQUE IS NOT THE PROBLEM

Trauma-Informed Freediving Instructor Course

For instructors who want to recognize changing state, respond without escalating distress, and create the conditions in which skill becomes accessible again. Twenty-one instructors across seven countries—and every major freediving agency represented so far.

WHEN REST DOES NOT FEEL RESTORATIVE

Why Rest Feels Unsafe

Nervous system education for people who are depleted yet become more activated when they stop. Understand why vigilance can persist beyond danger—and begin building capacity for rest without treating your body like an adversary.

04 / MEET ELAINE HICKS

The work crosses disciplines because the problem does.

Elaine Hicks is a licensed clinical social worker, certified substance use counselor, freediving instructor, nervous system educator, researcher, and author.

Her work connects clinical practice, lived experience, physiological research, and the underwater environment—translating complex nervous system processes into language and tools people can actually use. Elaine developed trauma-informed approaches to freediving instruction and studies how the mammalian dive response, mastery, and co-regulation can support psychological wellbeing.

05 / RESEARCH + PUBLICATIONS

Not inspiration
without evidence.

Elaine’s research examines freediving, physiological state, psychological safety, self-efficacy, trauma recovery, and flourishing. The work asks a more useful question than whether a person “should” be able to perform: what conditions change access to performance?
